Dental Care: Your Child’s First Visit

Posted .

Are you about ready to take your child in for their first dental visit? If so, we are so excited to work with you and your child! Dentists today generally recommend bringing your child in for their first visit by the age of 1 or within 6 months of their first tooth eruption. When you come into our office, you can expect:
1. An easy appointment: Your child’s first visit often involves little treatment. The first appointment is important because your child has an opportunity to meet the dentist in a non-threatening way. This will help your child feel more comfortable in the dental chair in the future.
2. A gentle oral exam: Your dentist may ask you to sit in the dental chair with your child so your child feels as comfortable and as safe as possible. Or, your dentist might ask you to wait in the reception area so your dentist can create a trusting friendship with your child. During the exam, your dentist will gently check your child’s entire oral cavity. While they is doing so, they will examine the teeth, jaw, and oral tissues.
3. A simple cleaning: If necessary, your dentist or hygienist will provide a gentle cleaning and fluoride treatment. These treatments will help your child’s smile become healthy and strong.
4. An educational conversation with the dentist: During the appointment, your dentist might talk to you about some things that you can do to help your child grow into the healthiest smile possible. Some of the topics may include good oral hygiene routines, fluoride needs, oral habits, teething, developmental milestones, future appointments, and proper nutrition.
Your child’s first visit will be simple, easy, and beneficial. If you would like to know more about the appointment and what to expect, we invite you to call our office today and talk to a member of our friendly dental team. We look forward to hearing from you!
