Restoring a Severely Decayed Tooth with a Bridge

Posted .

Sometimes severe tooth decay can extend so deep into a tooth that the internal structures cannot be effectively restored through a root canal. A tooth in this extreme level of distress might need to be extracted before a dangerous infection can form in the gum tissues.
Losing a tooth in this manner not only impairs your ability to chew food, it could also impact your speech. The tooth also provided structure for the surrounding teeth. In time they could start to turn and move to partially fill the void. This can lead to a series of other problems.
In a situation like this Pine Ridge Dental will often recommend having the tooth restored by installing a bridge. A bridge is single piece of dental work, that basically mimics the appearance of a natural tooth. It is joined to a pair of crowns that are anchored on abutments formed from the neighboring teeth.
First Dr. Tom Tetrick forms a pair of abutments out of each of the neighboring teeth. This is done by removing the majority of enamel layer of each tooth, leaving a small amount surrounding the dentin layer and root. A temporary crown is then placed over each abutment to protect them. Then an impression of the area and your bite pattern is taken. This will be sent to a dental lab, where your new bridge is made.
Once the dental lab has completed your permanent bridge Pine Ridge Dental will call you in for a brief second appointment. The temporary crowns are removed and your new permanent bridge is cemented in place over the abutments. With proper care and cleaning your new bridge will last for many years to come.
