What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

Posted .

If you’re interested in knowing what happens during a dental cleaning, then our dentists, Dr. Tom Tetrick, is more than happy to help you. The more you know, the more comfortable and relaxed you might feel in the dental chair. So, when you come to our office for your next cleaning appointment, you can expect the following steps:
Step No. 1: Your hygienist will get you ready to take some X-rays. They might do this by giving you a chest shield and bitewings. They will also give you the play-by-play on how the X-rays are going to work.
Step No. 2: Your hygienist will examine your teeth with a little dental mirror and a small dental tool to make sure your teeth and gums are in tip-top shape.
Step No. 3: Your hygienist will deeply clean your teeth by removing the plaque and tartar from the surfaces and by scrubbing the smile with a high-powered toothbrush and your choice of flavored toothpaste. They will also floss your teeth to make sure the crevices of the smile are all clean.
Step No. 4: Your hygienist will rinse your mouth with water to wash any debris away. Your hygienist will likely rinse your mouth multiple times throughout the appointment.
Step No. 5: Your hygienist will strengthen your teeth with a fluoride treatment that will come in the form of a varnish, gel, or foam. The fluoride will help your teeth resist tooth decay and enamel erosion.
